Larry Stuelpnagel is an Assistant Professor
at Medill and a College Lecturer in
the Department of Political Science at Northwestern
University. He joined Medill and Northwestern
in 1995 after a 25-year career in broadcast
journalism.
From 1972 to 1980, he climbed the professional
ladder at KHSL-TV in Chico, California,
serving as a reporter, anchor and news director.
As news director, he took the station to first
place in the ratings.
In 1980, he moved east and joined WNJN in
New Jersey and WNET in New York, primarily
as a political reporter for their jointly
produced newscast, New Jersey Network News.
His reporting and documentary work earned
two Emmy's, two Deadline Club Awards from
the New York City Chapter of SPJ/SDX, two
Silver Medals from the New York International
Film & Video
Festival, a CINE Golden Eagle, and other
honors.
At Northwestern Larry teaches broadcast
and multi-platform reporting at Medill,
and courses on politics and the press in Political
Science and the American Studies program.
In 1998, his graduate broadcast journalism
class produced Medill's first Web cast with
live election coverage. In 2004, he co-authored
a study of Asian Americans in news management
for the Asian American Journalists Association.
The results were presented at the UNITY
Journalists of Color Convention in Washington,
D.C. He helped design the news content portion
of the Knight Study, The Local TV News Experience,
in 2006/07. In spring 2007, Larry was honored
for his teaching when he was voted one of
Northwestern's outstanding faculty members
by Medill students.
He has a B.A. and M.A. in Communication
Studies with an emphasis in broadcast journalism
from California State University, Chico.
He and his wife Betsy Erkkila and daughter
Suli live in Wilmette, Illinois.
