It's not breaking news that women media executives lag behind their
male counterparts in advancing their careers on an industry-wide
scale. For instance, although women make up nearly half of the daily
newspaper workforce, only 14 percent have the clout title of CEO,
president or publisher, according to the 2003 Women in Newspapers
report. In addition, research shows women, with only a few exceptions,
to be clustered at the lower levels or at posts outside the most
prevalent lines of succession.
Of course, it's not all bad news for women, because they continue
to make professional strides on many different and individual levels
within media companies. This year the Media Management Center
invites you to join our most collaborative effort yet, our third
annual conference, “Women in Media: Power and Influence”
on February 24-26, 2004 at the James Allen Center on the
Northwestern University Evanston campus.
There you will collaborate with women from a variety of mediums, forming lasting professional and social networks, gaining insight into contemporary industry issues and, most importantly, developing and honing the skills necessary to address the obstacles facing women in the industry. Thanks to a grant from the Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation, the low registration fee includes training materials, meals and lodging.
This conference will affect the lives of future women leaders in the media profession.
