Alumni perspectives: Q&A with Ellen Soeteber

Q: Where are you finding the greatest success today?
A: The biggest challenges newspapers face are to grow our business and to grow our quality and service to readers. These two elements go hand in hand. Newspapers that are aggressively pursuing such a strategy, instead of a cut-cut-cut approach, will be the ones that succeed.

Q: What issues or questions or concerns do you need help on?
A: Here's the biggest conundrum facing news media: Newspapers make margins beyond the wildest dreams of many other businesses. At the same time, they have unique protections, obligations, and opportunities. How do we square these?

Q: Anything else you would like to say about media management issues today?
A: Many of the business folks need to understand better what makes newspapers special and therefore so successful. The best ones get this and are also the most successful as a result.
