Training, training, and more training

When executives are asked what is the one thing that would make them more successful in their job, most often the reply is training.

The sluggish economy has caused companies to trim or cancel training for their employees for the last few years. If executives are not trained for the constantly changing business environment, you have given your competitors an advantage in the marketplace. Today, customers are smart and have high expectations of companies. Do you have the right people with the knowledge to make your company No. 1? This is an important question for your success.

Employees value training and it is one way to retain top performers. It helps executives know they are valued and their contributions to the company are recognized. This is a way to keep the most talented executives, and companies that invest in their executives get better productivity and are more profitable.

Sharon Peter’s book Caught in the Middle recommends training, but cautions that there are some down sides to training. It can be counterproductive if it is irrelevant and ineffective. The participants in her survey asked specifically for training that gives them skills that will help them perform better on the job, training that carries forward the priorities and the agendas of the organization.

Media executives face threats from many platforms in the global marketplace. To ensure that you have the talent to lead your organization, look for people with initiative, perspective, and leadership abilities — and train them for your desired result.

The rules of engagement are changing. Media companies are merging and changing regulations are opening doors for new opportunities. Is your organization prepared for the unknown business climate ahead? Only the future holds the answer, but investing in training your best people can increase your odds of success.
