What is the Media
Management Center?
The Center is Northwestern University's Media Management Center
a resource center for newspapers, broadcast, cable, magazine
and new media industries. The Center brings management expertise
in areas such as strategic planning, marketing, branding, finance,
accounting, sales force productivity, corporate governance and negotiations
to media executives. The Center conducts research on media challenges,
collaborates with media organizations to find innovative solutions
and provides executive education for leaders in the media industries.
What does the Center do?
The Center specializes in top-level management solutions and training
for media industries. The Center's activities fall in three primary
areas: executive education seminars, research, and partnerships.
The Center offers a range of executive education programs, some
tailored for the newspaper industry, others in partnership with
the National Association of Broadcasters, the Magazine Publishers
of America and American Business Media. The Center also designs
company-specific seminars tailored to a company's unique circumstance.
To constantly enrich its curriculum and find answers to the media's
pressing questions, the Center conducts original and applied research,
much of which finds its way into the Center's publications. In addition
to teaching and research, the Center spends much of its time working
in collaboration with media companies, using its expertise and experience
to find solutions while also deepening its understanding of emerging
media issues.
How is the Center connected with Northwestern University?
The Center is affiliated with both the Medill School of Journalism
and the Kellogg School of Management both highly prestigious
schools. This connection to Medill and Kellogg gives the Center,
and the media organizations that we work with, access to some of
the best researchers and media experts in the world. The Center's
director, John Lavine, is a full professor in both schools, and
the Center draws from the faculty from both schools for its executive
education programs and research projects.
How is the Center different from other continuing education programs
for the media?
Unlike some continuing education programs, the Center specializes
in management education, using business school and journalism school
faculty. The Center's courses are highly-tailored for media executives,
offering in-depth management instruction along with journalism-specific
issues. The Center's courses are taught using media industry examples
by media-savvy instructors with extensive research and consulting
experience.
