Annenberg Professor of Communications, Law and Policy,
Newton Minow is the first Annenberg University Professor of Communications,
Law and Policy at Northwestern University. He was appointed to the
Kellogg faculty in 1987 and also serves as director of the Annenberg
Washington Program in Communications Policy Studies of Northwestern
University in Washington, D.C.
The Annenberg Washington Program is a neutral center
for the study and dissemination of communications policy issues.
Debates, seminars, and research projects bring together representatives
of industry, government, and universities. Its programs, while generally
based in Washington, are also held at various universities throughout
the United States, Europe, and Asia.
Minow served as a partner in the law firm of Sidley
& Austin for more than 25 years and is now counsel. He was chairman
of the Federal Communications Commission under President John F.
Kennedy. He is a director of the Aon Corporation, Foote, Cone &
Belding Communications, Inc., Sara Lee Corporation, Manpower, Inc.
and the Tribune Company.
His civic and public service directorships include
service as a life trustee of Northwestern University, a trustee
of Notre Dame University, the RAND Corporation, Chicago Educational
Television Association (WTTW), the International Institute of Communications,
and as Chairman of the Carnegie Corporation of New York. He has
served as chairman of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and
RAND.
In 1986 Minow was a visiting fellow of the John
F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. He holds honorary
degrees from Brandeis University, the University of Wisconsin, Northwestern
University, Columbia College, Governors State University, Rand Graduate
School, and the University of Notre Dame. He was elected a Fellow
of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1989.
