Scott C. Smith
has been president and publisher of Chicago Tribune Company since
May 1997, serving as CEO of the Midwest's leading newspaper, plus
its related developing businesses. During this period, the Chicago
Tribune celebrated its 150th anniversary, won four Pulitzer
prizes for journalistic excellence and achieved record financial
results.
Mr. Smith has
been an executive with Tribune Company, the Chicago Tribune's
parent corporation, for 23 years. From 1993 to 1997, he was president
and publisher of the SunSentinel, Tribune's South Florida
newspaper.
He served
from 1991 to 1993 as Tribune Company senior vice president/development,
from 1985 to 1991 served as Tribune's chief financial officer and
held a series of corporate finance positions from 1977 to 1985.
Mr. Smith played a lead role in Tribune's initial public offering
in 1983 and a number of key acquisitions and divestitures over the
next decade. He managed Tribune's investment in America Online in
1991 and served on the AOL board of directors until 1997.
A native of
the Chicago area, born September 13, 1950, Mr. Smith holds a bachelor's
degree from Yale University and a master's degree from the Kellogg
School of Management at Northwestern University. He started his
career with the Northern Trust Company in Chicago.
Mr. Smith
chairs the Chicago Public Education Fund. He serves as a trustee
of Northwestern Memorial Corporation, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra
and National-Louis University. He is a member of the Kellogg School
of Management Advisory Board, the University of Illinois President's
Advisory Council, Chicago United, and the Chicago Annenberg Challenge
board. He is also the past chair of the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago
and the United Negro College Fund Advisory Board in Illinois.
